We were up early today to see my eye surgeon. A routine visit turned into something epic as my right eye underwent another round of painful laser surgery. Just before leaving for NYC, in Sydney my annual check up revealed a couple of tears in the retina in my right eye. They were repaired and my Sydney doctor suggested a follow up in a week or so when I was in NYC. So off we went to see Dr Nissen.

Everything is great with my left, good, eye.

Dr Nissen put this one back together two years ago. In October 2013 while walking along ninth avenue my left eye suffered a major retinal detachment. I underwent emergency surgery at the time and have stayed in touch with Dr Nissen since that time. He is a skilled and caring eye surgeon. He checked out my left eye, very pleased he said with a little bit of pride. He and my Australian surgeon are still amazed he was able to repair the detachment.

While looking at my right eye though he noticed that the tears picked up a week earlier had torn further and some more lasering was needed.

He did it then and there. Anyone whose had laser treatment to repair the retina will know it’s pretty painful. I had about 200 zaps over a 20 minute period as Dr Nissen put the retina back in place and repaired the tears.

I sat for a while as the pain slowly subsided and Dr Nissen spoke to Mardi about what he had done and what we needed to to over the coming few days. Nothing as dramatic as two years ago, but still some rest and no strenuous activities for a few days.

After leaving the surgery we took the doctors advice and made it slowly to Central Park and we sat in the sun by the sailing boat pond for a while. We soaked up the serene surroundings of the statues in the area. Alice in Wonderland and Hans Christian Anderson and a few ducks. We had a hot chocolate and sat as Mardi described the surroundings to me. I had to keep my eyes closed for a while.

After an hour or so we slowly walked home down Fifth Avenue, picking up some Lindt chocolate on the way.

I developed a pretty wicked head ache following the laser surgery, so we headed home and took it easy Monday afternoon and night. We also decided to spend Tuesday in to give my eye a break. We had chocolate, so would survive!
