March 2006

We flew from LA to Denver to visit a couple of modern animal shelters. We’d made quite a few contacts before the conference and firmed up plans for visits following the conference.

We visited the Buddy Centre (https://www.ddfl.org/buddy-center/), a showcase of what animal sheltering can be. The shelter was built on the back of a single $25M donation from an NBA player. And wow, that money went a long way and the support since that time a few yers ago has certainly meant thousands of lives have bene saved.

We toured the whole facility, a facility looking after 50,000 animals a year. From intake, to care, to adoption, to after adoption care, they have a wonderful process, backed by people and resources. The recognition of their supporters is fantastic and something others cold lean from, I know I did.

I took so much away from the visit.

We then spent a day looking around Denver: we visited Red Rocks: famed for a U2 concert. We visited Dinosaur Valley: where you could still see fossils in the rocks still in place, 50 million year old fossils, wow. We visited Buffalo Bill’s grave and toured the mile high city seeing wild animals, snow and some great buildings.
