Our last full day on this second chance at New York City.  We’ve had a ball, despite the weather.  Note to self: don’t visit New York in August!

We’ve fallen in love all over again with a city that has so much to offer, that is so paradoxical it warps your senses.

Today we do two contrasting things that exemplify this city, first a trip to Central Park. We wander again, you could visit 100 times and not see all of the park.  There is so much to see and do.  Again I experiment with some tilt shift photography.

After the park we wander to 42nd St and the Hudson river. We board the massive aircraft carrier, The Intrepid. Permanently docked here, this war shop has been converted to a sea and air museum. The deck is littered with aircraft of all shapes and sizes and the below deck areas carry displays of wartime heroics and battles.

More interesting to us than the war machines of the past is the Concorde, which is also on deck. We wander its slender length, its bizarre shaped and moveable nose sector before entering the tight space.  As part of our tour we hear about stories of Princes Diana and Prince Charles sitting in the front row as they jetted from New York to London and return.  We tour the tight cockpit and learn more about the Concorde program and why ultimately cost, not tragedy, forced the cancellation of this modern miracle of the skies.

After our tour, we wander back to Midtown along 42nd Street, passing some icons we’ve are becoming familiar with.  The Chrysler Building, Grand Central and the New York Public Library.

We reflect on this trip, as I said, our second chance in New York. It’s been hot, but wow, we’ve packed a lot into a week. The museum visits offered us cool comfort and relief from the heat, as well as a wealth of interesting and informative exhibits.  Our tours around the island and to the top of the tallest buildings gave us contrasting perspectives of the place many call the Big Apple. We’ve learned more about the history of the city and have grown familiar with the transit system.

Who knows maybe one day we will come back!
