We love sea days. They’re a perfect opportunity to slow down, relax and enjoy everything the ship has to offer. Discovery Princess has plenty happening, but this morning we deliberately chose a quieter pace.
We stayed in our room for most of the morning, reading and enjoying the calm seas from our balcony. With the doors wide open, the sound of the ocean and the gentle motion of the ship set the tone. Letting the morning slip by without any sense of urgency was incredibly relaxing and exactly what a sea day should feel like.
When we eventually decided to eat, we headed up to the casual dining area on Deck 16. Mardi grabbed a couple of slices from Slice, while I went for a burger from the Salty Dog Grill. Easy, unfussy and just right.
After lunch, we spent about an hour in the Crown Grill Lounge. It’s a great spot during the day to sit quietly with a drink and a book. From there, we moved on to the trivia venue toward the rear of the ship on Deck 7, where progressive trivia is held on sea days.
While waiting for trivia to begin, the ship’s hypnotist was on stage rehearsing his show. Watching someone run through hypnosis routines to an empty room is a bit surreal. He acted out conversations with imaginary volunteers, testing timing and jokes. I’m still not convinced hypnosis is real, but it was an amusing way to pass the time.
At 2.00pm we met up with our trivia friends for the progressive trivia tournament. It runs on every sea day, and we’ve been enjoying the challenge. We scored 17 out of 19 on day one, 19 on day two, and today we scored 14. Today’s quiz was tougher, but with the top score only 15, we were right in the mix.
We stayed on for more trivia afterward. Country music trivia was next, which we knew we’d struggle with, and we did. Then came general knowledge and a fun “famous foods” trivia, which suited us much better. Trivia onboard is always well run, the hosts are excellent, and it’s easy to drop in whether you’re with friends or not.
For dinner we kept things light and went to Ocean Terrace Sushi Bar. The sushi was fresh, filling and a good protein hit for both of us. Sitting there overlooking the Piazza is always enjoyable, with constant movement and activity below.
Later in the evening we wandered into the casino. We started with roulette, which has a habit of draining your wallet until your number finally lands and pulls you back in. After that we moved on to craps. This time I was the shooter, and I had a good run, landing a number of elevens that paid quite handsomely. By the end of it, we’d won back the $100 we’d lost the night before.
We finished the night on a poker machine called Founding Feathers, a very funny take on the founding fathers of the United States, reimagined as chickens and other farm animals. Fifty dollars lasted us a couple of hours, which is unusual, and the animations alone made it entertaining.
With an early start ahead of us for tomorrow’s shore excursion, we called it a night and headed to bed. Sea days like this are a reminder of why we love cruising. Unhurried, relaxed and exactly what we needed before another busy day ashore.
Whenever you’re ready, we can move straight into Day 06 or tighten this further for publishing.
