We headed down to the Flatiron district this morning. When we arrived, I looked up and saw for the first time the Flatiron building, with the dun high overhead and me standing in its magnificent shadow. I was in love. This building is elegant in every sense. From its ornate stone carvings around the base level, that continue upwards, to its unique shape. So slim at one end and fanning out at the rear, from above it looks like an iron, hence its title.

We wander around this area for a little while admiring the architecture before heading back to 41st St and spending some time at the Rockefeller Centre.

Our route to the Rockefeller Centre was along the high line. Entering near 23rd Street, we walked to the end of the High Line, near 34th, left the High Line and then walked the rest along 34th St to 5th Avenue and then up to 41st. Wow so much walking!

On the High Line we enjoy some great sculptures and an interesting elevated walk in between a number of buildings.

We pop into Macy’s on the way and check out the first ever escalator. It’s made out of wood!

We look around Macy’s and continue our walk.

At the Rock, we stand and watch ice skaters for a while. Some zoom around in expert style, while others grip the side barriers with white knuckles and wild eyes, fearful of falling. Partners hold hands and skate effortlessly around, parents’ guide young children for their first experience. It’s a joy to stand and watch for a while as day turns to night.

We then walk back to Times Square and take in the sights at night. It is almost day like as we bask in the false lighting of a million globes. It is essentially one big advertising board. From Broadway shows, the latest offerings from car dealers and apparel offerings, to fast food and everything in between. It is a mad mad place, with its own heartbeat, some say the centre of the universe, you can certainly see why.
