We’d planned a visit to the museum of the city of New York for a few days now but hadn’t made it, so today was the say. We’ve visited a couple of times over the years, but museums like this always present new exhibits and today was no different.

Before venturing up town though we walked broadway, there were reports of loose animals roaming broadway, so we wandered out to check them out.

The fancy animal carnival was designed by Hung Li, a Taiwanese artist. The bold colours, exaggerated shapes and sizes were certainly a thing to see as we walked along broadway between 41st and 37th streets. Check out the photos.

After we’d finished we caught the train uptown to Central Park west, 110th street and walked across to the East side and back down to 104th street to the museum.

The stunning light installation at the entrance is amazing. As we were looking at it we were offered a tour around the new exhibits, which we accepted. The exhibits on show were fascinating.

Gay Gotham, a look at the development of gay and lesbian lifestyle in NYC over 100 years. Andy Warhol, Leonard Bernstein, among others were champions of a movement that shaped tolerance not only in NYC but internationally.

Mastering the Metropolis was an enthralling look at architecture and how the city’s zoning rules governed the current cityscape. The set back rule being the dominant rule st play for many years. This rule is responsible for many of the iconic buildings and there wedding cake tiered structure. This way the streets below still enjoyed light snd air and developers could still build tall buildings.

NYC at it’s core was an interesting movie showing how NYC came to be and what occurred that led to it becoming the epicenter of trade and finance.

Teaspoons to Titanic was an eclectic collection of artifacts including collector tea spoons and an authenticated deck chair from the Titanic.

Overall a great visit and we left a little after 4.30 and caught the subway home as the sun set.

We’d arranged to meet Bob snd Cathy for dinner snd got home just on 5, with Bob snd a Cathy arriving shortly after. We showed them our department and chatted for a while before heading out to dinner at Tony’s, a local family style Italian restaurant on 43rd street.

We walked the block and were seated in the centre of the large, busy and noisy dining room. We ordered a salad and a couple of dishes, forewarned by Bob, Cathy and the wait staff that the meals were massive. So two dishes between the four of us was plenty. Delicious chicken Parma and a bow tie pasta special, creamy with peas. The food was amazing. A quick dessert of Nutella cake and Italian cheesecake and we headed home. Bob and Cathy caught the subway home and on our way home we couldn’t resist a hot chocolate, it was freezing cold and we had a whole block to walk.  As we walked a throng appeared just behind us, camera phones clicked. Then a blurry figure got into a car and sped off. I then heard people say “The Boss”. Had Bruce Springsteen just walked past me! It was over in a few seconds, we turned our heads into the cold wind and headed home, an encounter with The Boss…who knows.

Another great day in the Big Apple. The next few days rain looms large on the forecast, so some indoor activities are on the agenda. Including listening to some Bruce.
