As part of a broader trip across three continents, I spent a day in Singapore. The trip was largely work related, well pretty much all work related. I met up with colleagues from the K9 association (think seeing eye and assistance dogs). Together we proceeded to meet with a number of like-minded organisations to both learn about low vision in Singapore and to determine if there were any commercial or support opportunities.

It was a very productive day and I have high hopes for further discussions in the coming months.

Once I completed the days work, Mardi and I met back at Changi Airport and looked around.  Plenty of shopping options, lots of food options. We only had a couple of hours before our flight to London and of particular note was the Pearl: a large internal water feature we were both keen to experience.

When we think of airports, images of long security lines, bustling terminals, and the constant hum of announcements come to mind. However, Changi Airport in Singapore defies these stereotypes with an experience that is nothing short of extraordinary. Among its many attractions, The Pearl at Changi Airport stands out as a shimmering symbol of innovation and luxury in the aviation world.

The Pearl is not just an architectural marvel; it’s a testament to the seamless blend of opulence and practicality. Situated in the heart of the Jewel Changi complex, this installation has redefined the concept of what an airport can offer. Designed to captivate and inspire, The Pearl is a stunning installation that draws visitors from all over the world, whether they are travellers or locals seeking a unique experience.

The Pearl is a spherical installation crafted from thousands of reflective panels that capture and refract light, creating a mesmerising visual effect. Its design symbolises Singapore’s forward-thinking ethos and commitment to excellence. The intricate engineering behind The Pearl involves cutting-edge technology and artistry, making it a centrepiece of Changi Airport’s innovative spirit.

Changi Airport is renowned for its ability to transform the stressful travel experience into a serene and enjoyable one. The Pearl plays a significant role in this transformation. Its placement in the Jewel, surrounded by lush indoor gardens, soothing water features, and a plethora of dining and shopping options, offers travellers a sanctuary of calm amid their journeys. Visitors can relax in the nearby seating areas, basking in the ambient light reflected by The Pearl, or explore the myriad attractions of Jewel Changi, including the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, the Rain Vortex.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, The Pearl serves a functional purpose. It embodies the airport’s commitment to enhancing the overall travel experience. The installation is strategically placed to be visible from various vantage points within Jewel Changi, drawing visitors through the complex and encouraging them to explore the myriad amenities available. This thoughtful integration of art and function exemplifies Changi Airport’s dedication to creating a holistic and engaging environment for all who pass through its doors.

Changi Airport has long been recognised as one of the world’s best airports, consistently topping rankings for its facilities, efficiency, and passenger satisfaction. The addition of The Pearl has further cemented its status as a global destination in its own right. It’s not just a transit point; it’s a place where travellers plan extended layovers to fully experience what the airport has to offer. From luxurious lounges and exquisite dining options to unique attractions like The Pearl, Changi Airport provides an unparalleled travel experience.

We absolutely loved the experience, the combination of the tranquil surroundings and the mesmerising water vortex, certainty washed away the days humidity and prepared us for the long flight ahead of us. If you are ever in Singapore, stop by the Pearl and enjoy a quiet reflective moment. Watch our video below.
