Who would have thought we’d be back. We’ve only got a week, so we hit the ground running. Grand Central Terminal is our first stop. We again admire this wonderful space, somewhat different in the summer.  It’s warm inside, travellers are dressed differently, lots of shorts and short sleeved shirts, and a lot more of them.

We visit Nike for some clothes, the exchange rate is so good, everything is so cheap.

We arrange subway tickets for the week and Mardi visits a couple of cosmetic shops.

We also pop into Century 21, again some clothes are in our sights.  Century 21 is a discount retail outlet with clothes, belts, ties all well below retail and given the Aussie dollar is so good it is a chance to stock up on shirt and ties.

We then head off to the United Nations Building.  We’ve pre-arranged a tour. The UN is a massive building, museum and education centre located at the end of 42nd St on the East River side of Manhattan.

We tour the museum and learn about the UN and its work. The most interesting and haunting exhibit is an artefact from Hiroshima. A statue that was knocked over following the atomic blast that ended World War Two. Once side is pock marked with nuclear erosion, while the other, buried in rubble at the time, is perfectly preserved. It stands as a stark reminder of the horror or atomic weapons and a permanent memorials to the hundreds of thousands of people who perished in the blink of an eye that day.

We then enter the main floor of the General Assembly.  This massive space with a large gold embossed backing wall and a large UN emblem hung high above the floor fill sour vision. Fanning out in front of the emblem and main stage are rows and tows of seats moving out in ever increasing semi arcs.  Each row has a name plate for countries designating their seating position.  We locate Australia, towards the back in the central isle.

We enjoy Shake Shack for dinner and pop into Juniors, a delicious dessert shop.  We grab a New York Style Cheesecake for after dinner.  We head back to the hotel after a hectic first day.
