The day after Thanksgiving has become an event in itself. These days called Black Friday, shops go into overdrive offering massive discounts.

Not wanting to shop in midtown or at the Rockefeller Centre we first head up to 8th Avenue for lunch at Shake Shack.

On our way we call into the doctors to get Mardi’s results from her infected foot from last week. We also pick up a prescription for me. I’m having my fair share of foot problems as well. An episode of gout has grabbed my big toe in the last couple of days but some drugs will clear that up in a day.

After lunch we catch a bus down 42nd street to 3rd Avenue.

We look around the shops around 3rd Avenue and then walk to Grand Central for a rest and hot chocolate.

Along the way we circle the Chrysler building, another of my favourites. Adorned with oversized hood ornaments, the building plays homage to its original owners, who were never tenants, selling the building shortly after it was constructed in 1930. It remains one of the tallest buildings in New York, 7th tallest currently, and is the finest example of art deco design.

A little more wandering and browsing takes us close to the shuttle, where we catch it to 42nd-Times Square, where we have a break back at our hotel.

We venture out again later in the afternoon to the Flatiron district to wander some shops along 5th Avenue and between 23rd and 18th.

Mardi says she’s starting to feel a little unwell. Let’s hope the antibiotics she’s had for her toe keep any illness at bay.

We head home as the sun sets and a cold wind blows down 5th Avenue. It’s clear but getting very chilly. We’ve got a few busy days ahead so call it a day
