In keeping with our recent plans, we again travelled to an Australian destination. This time, Daylesford in Victoria’s high country, with good friends Michael and Kathryn. Previously we’ve visited Tasmania, Uluru and Sydney.

We set out on Thursday, flying from a snowy Canberra (it is November, spring, so snow is unusual) into Melbourne and drove about an hour north west. The weather was much the same. Eastern Australia was in the grips of a southerly cold snap. We would see more sleet and freezing temperatures before we headed home.

We booked a country house for our stay. A large four bedroom place which took us back a century with its decor and old world charm.

After settling in we visited the town centre and bought some supplies as we explored the local area. A collection of shops selling curios, art and local produce were intermingled with cafes and takeaway food shops. For dinner we discovered a local pizza joint and got some takeaway pizza. Beppe’s served us up a treat.

On Friday, the only sunny day, we ventured out and did a treasure hunt around the lake and natural spring area. We enjoyed lunch at the Boathouse before circumnavigating the lake as part of our treasure hunt. The hunt saw us use a GPS device to search for 12 waypoints and answer questions at each waypoint A great way to see the lake and learn some local knowledge. It was a beautiful afternoon exploring the local area. As we were finishing we found an injured juvenile possum. A few phone calls helped us locate the best place to take it: so Mardi wrapped it in my jacket and the four of us rushed off to the local vet. We all hoped the possum would be fine.

Over the weekend, we went out when the weather wasn’t too cold, visiting a distillery, the natural springs and enjoyed local food and shopping. We walked the botanic gardens, Wombat Hill and visited the local convent, enjoying the gardens and architecture. On Saturday night we enjoyed a delicious local Japanese meal. Kadota, was a local surprise we read about in a tourist magazine the day before. Really nice and really worth the visit if you’re in Daylesford.

Sunday evening was a highlight where we had dinner at the Lakehouse. Just delicious ingredients done perfectly in gorgeous surroundings.

We discovered a few little nice places to eat, including Cliffy’s, Daylesford Hot Chocolate and Beppe’s for pizza. All delicious and all well worth the visit if you ever visit Daylesford.
